Empowering ME!
A College and Career Preparation Day
Thank you to all who supported this event!
Over 100 high school girls, their moms/leaders, and college alumnae participated in a day-long conference designed to help them in their college and career planning. The event, hosted by the Fund Development Department, was the first alumnae event targeting high school and college students.
The day started with breakfast, a physical fitness workout/wake-up session and a series of 23 workshops covering a wide range of topics that are important for students to consider in their post grad planning. The workshops included:
Future ME! College applications, essay writing, career schools, job market, community service, volunteerism, social media and beyond.
Healthy ME! Healthy choices, social, emotional and physical well-being in high school, college, and beyond.
Financing ME! Scholarships, financial aid, banking, savings, debt free after college and more.
University ME! Adapting to college life, students club/activities, Prep PSAT, SAT, ACT and cost of dorming, and healthy relationships.
Professional ME! Dressing for success, etiquette, résumé writing, and career options.
Our keynote speaker, Leslie Segrete, a Girl Scouts of Nassau County Board Member and television/radio personality, spoke to our guests about her experiences in college, careers choices, and her latest projects. She strongly encouraged everyone to follow their passion. Leslie even took time to greet the guests individually.
The Exhibitor Hall was composed of Sponsor and information tables with representation from Hofstra University, Briarcliffe College, Long Island University Post, Molloy College, UnitedHealthcare, Madison National Bank, Huntington Learning Center, American Heart Association, Moxxie Network, goCAMPUSing, and B-FIT/FEMCHO.
The conference closed with a Panel Discussion of four young women, ages 18 to 24, who talked about their college life, their course and major choices, the out of classroom learning, activities they participated in, social choices, internships, travel, life after college and/or their current job.
