Patch Programs and Earned Age-Level Awards

Here are some patch programs and earned age-level awards to explore with your Girl Scout Troop.   Most of them were developed through Girl Scouts of Nassau County. They cover a wide range of topics and offer unique learning experiences for your girls. Some of the information can be downloaded below. The other Patch Program booklets are available from your local Association Resource Liaison or the Resource Room at Girl Scouts of Nassau County. Once you have completed the activities, purchase the patches/awards at our Girl Scout Shop, 516.741.2550 ext. 202.  Note: Religious Recognitions are not sold in the GS Shop.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County Oceanography Try-It

Girl Scouts of Nassau County Oceanography Try-It was modeled on a similar one offered by Oregon’s Columbia River Girl Scout Council.  The content has been modified for our local ecosystem.  Brownie Girl Scouts will enjoy these simple and fun activities.  The activities will help them understand and appreciate plant and animal life in the Atlantic Ocean.

         I FISH NY: A Fishing Patch Program (All age levels)

I FISH NY: A Fishing Patch Program was developed in collaboration with the New York Sea Grant.  Through this patch program your girls will learn about Long Island's many fresh and saltwater resources as they discover, connect, and take action.  Once your girls know some of the basics, they will plan a fishing trip to a local site and then "Go out and fish!"

Go Girl, GOVERN


The Go Girl, GOVERN Patch Program, for Junior, Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts, is sponsored by the Long Island Women's Agenda (LIWA) in conjunction with Girl Scouts of Nassau County, Inc.  Its purpose is to encourage girls to learn about the role of women in government and foster awareness of government as a future career choice.

Juliette Low World Friendship Patch Program "Countdown to Thinking Day"


Through this patch program Daisy, Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts learn about Juliette Low and the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).  The activities encourage international exploration and respect for individual differences.  The patch program is designed to start in October with Juliette Low's birthday (October 31st) and end in February with a Thinking Day Ceremony (February 22nd).    Sample ceremonies and a resource list are included to help complete the activities.

New York State of Mind - GSNC Earned Age-level Award

JUNIOR BADGE

New York - the Big Apple - is our home. It is a great state with diverse geographic features, industry and people. Many important historical events took place in New York State.  Now Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts can have fun learning about New York State and earn this award written by a Girl Scouts of Nassau County volunteer.

Every Drop Counts (All age levels)

This Patch Program sponsored by the Long Island Water Conference in conjunction with Girl Scouts of Nassau County is designed to teach the importance of water conservation.  Girls and their families will have fun tracking their water usage and taking the challenge to save as much water as possible in a one-week period.   The "Every Drop Counts" patch, sponsored by the L.I. Water Conference, is available free of charge in the Girl Scout Shop for the first 1,100 Girl Scouts of Nassau County participants.

CHOICES AND CHALLENGES:  Preparing Me for the World I Face (All age levels)

This patch program is designed for all age-levels, Daisy Girl Scouts through

Girls 11-17.   The overall goal of this innovative patch program is to prevent substance use and abuse. Using educational, age appropriate, fun activities

the program assists girls in developing and maintaining positive self-concepts

and self-confidence.  The booklet provides the leader with activities and

resources to promote these concepts.

Curiosity Box (All age levels)


Exploring math, science and technology can be fun!  The Curiosity Box uses a variety

of tools - tangrams, measuring tapes, prisms, and magnifiers - to investigate these areas. 

The patch program includes easy-to-follow directions for hands-on activities suitable for all

Growing Strong, Staying Healthy (All age levels)

This program teaches Girl Scouts to take control of their bodies and stay strong and healthy. Nutrition and exercise are stressed. (All Levels)

Imagination First (All age levels)


Through this program Girl Scouts of all levels explore the Arts in Girl Scout Program Materials (petals, try-its, badges, IP's), use their imagination in a "creative area" and discover cultural arts in their community by visiting a museum, seeing a performance, viewing an exhibit, attending a cultural fair, or learning through a guest at a troop meeting.

Girls Having Strong, Healthy Lungs: Asthma Awareness Patch Program (All age levels)

This 2002 patch program developed in conjunction with the Nassau-Suffolk Asthma Coalition has activities for all age levels.  Through this program girls learn about the respiratory system, how we breathe, and how to identify asthma triggers in our environment. It encourages girls to develop a healthy lifestyle by avoiding cigarette smoke, eating healthy foods, and exercising regularly.

Women are History (All age levels)

Celebrate the women of the past, present, and future!  Using a variety of age-appropriate activities, this program fosters an appreciation of the role of women in our society and encourages girls to actualize their own potential.

Living History Patch Program (Cadette/Senior/Ambassador)




This patch program for Girl Scout Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador level explores the history of Girl Scouting.  It encourages girls to develop an appreciation of the past and present day Girl Scouting and to use their imaginations to explore the future.

 

 


TASTEBUDS! Patch Program: Exploring Diversity Through Dining



This patch program is designed for Brownie, Junior, Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts. Through this patch program girls widen their horizons by learning about another country.  The activities include visiting a restaurant, learning about the country's culture and sampling its cuisine. By repeating the activities for additional countries, the girls can    receive the YUMMY! GREAT! TASTY! patch bars.

Be a Brownfield Buster:
Girl Scouts Keep Long Island's Environment Clean and Healthy!


This patch program is designed for all age-levels.  Through the program activities girls learn about and identify brownfields (abandoned and/or contaminated properties).  Contact the Resource Room if you would like to borrow a resource packet with additional information and pictures of Long Island Brownfields.  The "Be a Brownfield Buster" patch, funded by Sustainable Long Island for an introductory period, is available free of charge in the Girl Scout Shop for Girl Scouts of Nassau County.

SUM-MORE GIRL SCOUTING (All levels)
      

Are you planning some activities with your Girl Scout Troop this summer?  Girl Scouting can be a great year-round activity for girls. The summer months provide unique opportunities for Girl Scouts to participate in activities that require warmer weather or more time to accomplish. This patch program is designed to recognize a troop's summer activities.

Religious Recognitions available to Girl Scouts 

Did you know there are religious awards and emblems that girls and adults in Girl Scouting are eligible to earn?  While Girl Scouting does not endorse any specific religion, Girl Scouting does foster and support an inclusive environment in which girls develop respect for people of all faiths. Girl Scouts recognizes that religious instruction is the responsibility of parents and religious leaders. Each girl is encouraged to become a strong member of her own religious group.
