GIRL SCOUTS OF NASSAU COUNTY NAMED ONE OF AARP 2007 BEST EMPLOYERS FOR WORKERS OVER 50 SC Johnson, Volkswagen, John Deere Among Other Employers Creating Exemplary Policies Toward 50+ Employees
AARP The Magazine to Feature Best Employers in November-December Issue
[New York, NY] – A number of employers across the country, including Girl Scouts of Nassau County, are demonstrating that enlightened policies toward 50+ employees make good business sense, based on the 2007 list of AARP Best Employers for Workers Over 50.
“Employers that take a world class approach in their policies toward 50 and over workers understand that the result is more productive employees,” said AARP State Director Lois Aronstein while announcing New York’s winners.
With seventy-two percent of its employees over age 50, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County offers many programs and benefits that are attractive to older workers, including permitting staff to use work hours to meet with financial advisors
The organization also established an “Action Planning Team” and an “Idea Group” in an overall effort to enhance employees’ quality of life by improving work/life balance. Both groups encouraged the organization to formalize flexible work options to meet this goal, and now employees are offered flextime, compressed work schedules and telecommuting.
“We are honored to receive this recognition. Our employees are the backbone of our organization, because of this, we do everything in our power to show our appreciation for their years of dedicated service,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “We feel that when our employees are best able to balance their lives between work and family, the result is improved productivity and customer service. This positively affects both our mission as well as our bottom line.”
Other companies who were acknowledged for their forward thinking policies included the Principal Financial Group (# 9), and Michelin North America (# 44). Each gained honors in what is the seventh year of AARP’s annual Best Employers search.
“Focusing on the employee’s personal needs pays dividends,” added Aronstein. “It is important that more employers – both large and small – recognize what tremendous assets 50 and over employees represent because of the skill and experience they bring to the workplace.”
The Best Employers winners will be honored at a dinner in New York, NY on September 26, 2007. A CEO roundtable discussion focusing on a new AARP study examining best practices for meeting the needs of 50+ workers among international and multinational corporations representing G7 countries will take place earlier that day. An international conference – titled “Profit From Experience” – will follow on September 27, 2007, also in New York, NY.
