BANK OF AMERICA SUPPORTS ANTI-BULLYING PROGRAMS FOR THE GIRL SCOUTS OF NASSAU COUNTY

Garden City, NY, February 12, 2008—Bank of America will continue to support the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Critical Issues program on Relational Aggression with a $6,000 grant. This key program not only helps participants understand why teenage girls engage in damaging behavior, but also gives them the tools and language to curb these behaviors.

“We are grateful for the continued support of Bank of America for this very crucial program,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director, Girl Scouts of Nassau County, “Without the continued support of the community, our efforts to eliminate relational aggression would not be possible.”

Relational Aggression is a growing problem with young girls today and refers to the bullying of peers both physically and emotionally.  In response to this growing problem, Girl Scouts of Nassau County has developed the Friendship Program, which was developed in conjunction with the Ophelia project and has been successfully implemented with numerous troops across Nassau County.  Girls, parents, teachers and community leaders are eager to expand the program’s reach.  Age appropriate curriculum is available for girls in kindergarten through 12th grades. The curriculum includes discussions and activities around popularity and leadership, the role of the bystander, and cyberbullying.  The program is designed to give girls the tools they need to decide for themselves what a healthy relationship is and what their role and responsibility is in keeping relationships healthy, both for themselves and others.
