GIRL SCOUTS OF NASSAU COUNTY HOST
“CELEBRASIAN: UNITING GIRLS & CULTURES”
Garden City, NY August 22, 2005
On Saturday, October 29th Girl Scouts of Nassau County
will host a conference for girls ages 11-17 focusing on the various
Asian cultures on Long Island. The event will take place at Long Island
University’s CW Post Campus in Brookville from 10:00 am to 5:00
pm. All girls will have the opportunity to participate in fun and educational
workshops and community presentations, which will address issues of
identity, multiculturalism, self-esteem, and leadership. Workshops will
cover topics like “Love the Skin You’re In,” “Embracing
Your Heritage” and “Dance to Your Own Beat.” Parents
who choose to stay for the activities will have their own discussion
groups covering such issues as raising children in two cultures and
navigating through the educational system.
“With more than 10,000 girls under the age of 18
living in Nassau County and of Asian heritage, it is in our best interest
as an organization and as good neighbors to foster this kind of dialogue
and program,” said Girl Scouts of Nassau County Executive Director
& CEO, Donna Ceravolo. This event has been planned by girls for
girls, their parents, and those wishing to know more about various Asian
cultures—the first of its kind on Long Island.
The event is the brainchild of the Girl Scouts of Nassau
County Asian Task Force comprised of volunteer members from the Bangladeshi,
Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, Korean, and Pakistani communities
in Long Island. Formed less than two years ago, the group forges relationships
and a better understanding between the Girl Scout and various ethnic
communities.
Girl Scouts is a contemporary movement that helps girls
discover fun, friendship and the power of girls together. With more
than 22,000 girls growing strong, Girl Scouts of Nassau County is big
and keeps growing every day. The organization seeks to give all girls
in Nassau County the opportunity to realize their full potential and
become better prepared for the future. Girl Scouts of Nassau County:
