GIRL SCOUTS OF NASSAU COUNTY SUPPORT BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
Garden City, NY October 1, 2008--An estimated 2 million women living in the United States have been treated for breast cancer with approximately 184,450 new diagnoses this year. The Girl Scouts of Nassau County are helping to combat these startling statistics by participating in educational programs for girls and their families during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“Breast cancer is a devastating illness that needs to be addressed on a constant basis,” says Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “We want to empower our girls to learn about risk factors associated with breast cancer in order to fight this disease and help spread its awareness.”
This year, the Girl Scouts of Nassau County will participate in the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program’s Creative Cups™ Art Exhibition. This event celebrates the lives of those living with breast cancer and those that have passed on because of this terrible disease. Teams of girls, consisting of Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts, are invited to participate in this year’s program transforming bras into works of art. The auction/gala celebration will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2009 and Adelphi University located in Garden City, NY.
“This exhibition is a truly an innovative way to spread awareness about breast cancer,” said Ms. Ceravolo. “We are sure our girls will develop interesting, fun and creative art for this important cause.”
In addition the Girl Scouts of Nassau County has started to build awareness for this disease through their participation in an Interest Project Award called, In the Pink. This program offers activities that empower girls to promote breast cancer awareness in their communities. Some of the activities included in In the Pink program focus on preventative care, treatment options, mammograms and family history. The program encourages girls to participate in breast cancer community events, design an exercise program, interview a breast cancer survivor, speak with a health professional, write a letter to the editor, and more.
