GIRL SCOUTS OF NASSAU COUNTY SHOUT OUT, “IT’S LEGO TIME!”
Garden City, NY August 4, 2008 – It’s LEGO time! The Girl Scouts of Nassau County will once again participate in the L.I. FIRST LEGO Robotics League scheduled to begin in September 2008!
“We are very excited to see what kind of innovative robot our girls invent this year,” says Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “This is a wonderful and creative way for us to compete with other Long Island organizations in a fun environment. We’re sure that our girls will give the competition their all and have a lot of fun doing so!”
This year’s theme is “Climate Connections, Building a Global Game Plan.” Robots and displays will focus on this theme. Up to ten teams of girls, consisting of Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts ages 9-14, are invited to participate in this year’s program. Each team will consist of a Coach/Leader overseeing meeting logistics, safety, team-building and themed displays. A Technical Mentor to help girls master the programming of the robot and other technical aspects of the projects will be available to each team. The role of the adults is to guide and advise the girls as they design and build a working LEGO robot and create displays.
The Girl Scouts of Nassau County, in conjunction with School Business Partnership of L.I. and L.I. FIRST, will provide training for all adults to help them mentor their teams. Training is available in August and October. Team meetings will be held weekly from September to December. Once the robot and display is completed, the team will compete in a series of tournaments.
