Girl Scouts Of Nassau County Helps Send Girls to Summer Camp

June 8, 2009 – For nine-year-old Kayla*, Girl Scouts camp offers the chance to swim and hike, build lasting friendships, develop new skills – and above all, laugh. And through Campership, a Girl Scouts of Nassau County program that provides financial assistance for its sleep-away and day camps, Kayla’s summer of fun and sun is now possible. That’s good news for Kayla’s single mother, who – saddled with debt and legal fees from a recent divorce – can work full time, knowing her daughter will enjoy a safe and active summer.

Each summer Girl Scouts of Nassau County sets aside funds so that girls like Kayla can attend summer camp. Unfortunately, however, the organization cannot meet the needs of every family.  And in these tough economic times, girls are still waiting to hear if they will receive the financial assistance required in order to attend camp this summer.

“Many families today are hard-pressed to make ends meet, let alone afford enriching summer programs for their children,” says Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “We are looking for financial support from the community to provide camperships to all of the families who need it.”

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County serves 1,200 campers at its three summer programs – two of which are day camps in Nassau County and one a sleep-away camp in East Hampton. Open to the general public, the day camps are geared for grades 1-7, and the sleep-away Camp is for grades 1-11.

The Summer Fun Day Camps are located at Cantiague Park and Wantagh Park. A typical day at these camps includes sports, arts & crafts, nature walks, singing and fun in the pool.  On rainy days, girls participate in such activities as indoor games, crafts, songs and more.

Camp Blue Bay in East Hampton is owned and operated by the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. It is located on 179 acres of beautiful beachfront property. The camp offers a variety of learning and challenging experiences. A typical day features boating, swimming, crafts, teambuilding activities, nature games, campfires, singing and more.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County is the preeminent leadership development organization for girls, with more than 22,000 girl and 7,000 adult members. Girl Scouting is the leading authority on girls' healthy development, and builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.
