Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

GIRL SCOUT COOKIE PROGRAM EXTENDED!

Garden City, NY March 31, 2009— If you didn’t get a chance to indulge your sweet tooth with the decadent taste of famous Girl Scout Cookies®, now’s your chance! The Girl Scouts of Nassau County will extend its Cookie Season through May 1st and asks the Long Island community to help with their final push for Cookie season sales. Be sure to stock up on all of your favorite Girl Scout treats before Cookie season comes to a close.

“In these economic hard times, Girl Scouting is also being affected. We are issuing a ‘May Day Call’ to our community to help our girls meet their Cookie Program goal,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “Without the support of the public to help us sell an additional 200,000 boxes of cookies by May 1st, many of our subsidized programs and activities will have to be curtailed or cut. The number of financial assistance requests we get has escalated this year and only with the public’s help can we continue to make Girl Scouting available to all girls.”

Girl Scouts will continue to sell the eight Cookie varieties, all containing zero grams of trans fat including Lemon Chalet Cremes, Trefoils, Do-Si-Dos, Samoas, Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips, Tagalongs, Thin Mints and the newest Cookie, Dulce de Leche. The newest Cookie, Dulce de Leche, is inspired by the classic confections of Latin America. The sweet Cookies are rich with milk, caramel chips and stripes.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County Cookie Booth sales will continue through May 1st. Be sure to visit the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Cookie Booth Locator tool on www.gsnc.org to find your nearest Girl Scout Cookie booth. Looking to give this sweet treat to others? Consider buying a box or case of Girl Scout Cookies® to go to our military troops overseas through the Girl Scouts of Nassau County program, Operation Cookie.

The Girl Scout Cookies Program® is the world's largest Business and Financial literacy program. In the 83 years that the Girl Scouts Cookie Program® has been in existence, it has continuously offered new ways to help girls grow strong. Girls learn important lessons about business, math, organization, sales, money management, negotiation, responsibility and most importantly, self-confidence. The Cookie Program also teaches girls to appreciate and take pride in the work that they've accomplished for themselves and for Girl Scouts. Because of the earning power of the Girl Scout Cookie Program®, no girl is ever turned away from Girl Scouts of Nassau County because of financial need. Participation in the Cookie Program allows each girl to learn and earn.

Donna Ceravolo adds, “We thank the Long Island community for their continued support and hope that by offering Long Islanders these sweet treats for another few weeks, we can continue to expose girls everywhere to the joys of Girl Scouting.”

Girl Scouts of Nassau County builds girls of courage, confidence and character. Girl Scouting in Nassau County creates an accepting and nurturing environment, which gives girls a chance to build character and receive skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them throughout their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. With more than 22,000 girl and 7,000 adult members, Girl Scouts of Nassau County has become the preeminent organization and leading authority for girls. The organization, now in its 96th year, continues to make the world a better place one girl at a time.
