LONG ISLAND FUND FOR WOMEN & GIRLS TO SUPPORT CRITICAL
GIRL SCOUTS OF NASSAU COUNTY PROGRAMS
Garden City, NY February 15, 2008—It seems that it is becoming harder and harder for young girls today to establish healthy relationships with their peers. That’s why the Girl Scouts of Nassau County is implementing the second phase of their Critical Issue’s Initiative, the Affection Connection, with the help of a $5,000 grant from the Long Island Fund for Women & Girls. This new program is designed to give girls the language, tools and tactics to discuss, identify and create healthy romantic relationships.
“We are extremely lucky to receive such generous support from the community to establish worthy programs for our girls,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director, Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “The Long Island Fund for Women & Girls is truly making a difference in improving relationships for girls in Nassau County.”
As an outgrowth of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County Friendship Program, which combats relational aggression among girls, it was discovered that girls who have been targets of relational aggression frequently enter into romantic relationships that are scarred by the consequence of social bullying. Girls will learn the difference between “good” healthy love and “bad” self–sabotaging love. They will learn how to sort through some common misbehavior that don’t belong in a healthy romantic relationship, what to expect from boys in a relationship and how to follow your heart and your values.
Girl Scouts of the Nassau County is the preeminent leadership development organization for girls with more than 22,000 girl and 7,000 adult members. Girl Scouting is the leading authority on girls' healthy development, and builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place. The organization, now in its 96th year, continues to strive to serve girls throughout Nassau County with innovative programming based on the values of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.
