SCRUNGIE TOWER

Supply List:

1 CD spindle with cover

paint brush, Mod Podge,

of  ribbon, self-adhesive gemstones.

The great thing about this craft is that you can use it to store different things:  hair scrungies, head bands and bracelets.   To decorate the spindle and cover as seen in GirlFriends, Spring 2010, follow these directions.

  • Take spindle and paint light coat of Mod Podge* on outside of base.  Measure and cut piece of ribbon to cover the outside base overlapping ¼ inch.  Paint light coat of  Mod Podge* over ribbon so it will create a protective coating.  Repeat this process again for the bottom and top of the cover.  Let dry a few minutes.

  • Place the gemstones in any design you choose (the example used medium and small stones in yellow, orange, dark pink and burgundy).  Allow to sit for 5 minutes.  If you use stones without an adhesive backing, secure using the Mod Podge* and let dry well before moving.

You may also want to add your own flare by using other items like:

Stickers                                                                                                                                               Pictures of your favorite things, people, or places

Tissue paper, scrapbook paper, gift wrap, fabric.

Glitter, buttons, flowers, paint

Note*  The Mod Podge is very thick and a little goes a long way.  It dries clear. When you paint the Mod Podge over something, it preserves it and gives it a glossy finish.

This Craft Corner is "Green" Snow Buddies

  • Suggested Supplies:  2 Cardboard Tubes; white fabric, felt, or batting; 2 old ankle socks; glue and glue gun; pom-poms; pine cones; small twigs; buttons; marker; glitter; string or ribbon; scissors.

    •  Take tubes and cover with white fabric of your choice.  Measure, leaving a little extra for an overlap. Let dry well. (Use glue gun )
    •  To make hat; take ankle sock and cut at the part where the sock curves off to the heel. Tie a string or ribbon around the end you just cut leaving a little bit hanging.  Add pom-pom to the end of the ribbon.  Place hat around top of tube.
    • Glue tubes together; glue pine cones to the bottom front and back of the tubes.  This creates a base to support the tubes. (Use glue gun)
    • Decorate your tubes any way you like using the items mentioned above or others you may prefer.
    • Cut a small hole in each tube to insert branches into tubes.  Secure with a little glue.
Using a paintbrush and regular glue gently paint small areas to add a little glitter.  Also add a little glitter to the hat, pine cones and the branches.

From the Spring 2009 Edition

This Craft Corner is “Green” Flower Craft

Supplies:

2 cardboard toilet paper rolls, (paper towel, gift wrap tubes)
4 green pipe cleaners or strips of green/brown paper
- scrap paper, gift wrap, tissue paper, wallpaper or paint
2 12” bamboo skewers
1 large pompom, large plastic bottle cap, or paper, approx 1 ½” in diameter
1 container for the finished flower pot

Tools:

ruler, pencil, glue, scissors, craft paint, mini stapler, scotch tape, paint brush, paperclip/binder clip

Using a ruler, measure ½” segments on the cardboard tube, and cut the segments with scissors. As you cut, the segments will flatten a bit. You will see they resemble a leaf/petal shape. IF YOU WANT TO COVER THE CARDBOARD w/paper, use a glue stick to adhere the paper to the uncut cardboard roll. Overlap a little. Let set about 10 minutes, THEN cut into segments. You may also want to cover or color the inside of the roll to give it a finished look. To line with paper, cut small strips, attach with glue stick and trim to fit. Let dry!

Lay 8 to 10 segments on the table to form a flower. Use the mini stapler to get inside two petals and staple, finish stapling all the petals together. Try to staple in the same place and close to the end of the petal. You can use scotch tape also.

Save some “petals” to be used as leaves.

Paint the flower. Paint additional petals green to resemble leaves. Let dry. You can use a hair dryer to speed up the dry time.

Take the 2 skewers with points sticking up. Start to cover ½” below the points by just wrapping the pipe cleaner or paper strips around both skewers. Use a little glue to help you.

Add leaves to the stem using the pipe cleaner or paper strips to hold the leaves in place. You can also glue the leaves in place. Let dry!

Take pointed end of skewers and place in between any two segments of the flower, add a small amount of glue and hold in place using a paperclip or binder clip. Let dry.

For the center of the flower you can use a large pompom, a paper circle, or a large juice bottle cap.

I have made lots of different things using paper tubes. Snowflakes, picture frames, snowmen, and animal faces are just to name a few. Use your imagination and let me know what you come up with! Alice McDonough, mcdonougha@gsnc.org.

The Twinning Project Meets Miami!

The “Twinning Reconnect Workshop,” held at Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida’s Camp Choee, Miami, Florida had the goal of sharing our Twinning project accomplishments and challenges, and of working on our second-year plans-of-action. We had fun together too! All ten Councils, facilitators from GSUSA, and a representative from WAGGGS participated. Please see a complete listing of Twinning Project personnel noted below.

Mildred Martinez, Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) volunteer and Yvonne Maria Mowatt, Community Services Manager, along with the Girl Guides of Peru agreed that one of their accomplishments was cross-communication, press releases, and sharing with the girls and their communities information on the issues of healthy eating. The Girl Guides of Peru, led by Frida Palomino, selected to work with Leaders and girls from Ayacucho, a city and “department” of central Peru which is in need of school materials. (Prior to UNICEF’s implementation of bilingual education in the community, students had never seen a textbook.) The Girl Scouts of Nassau County selected to work with the Roosevelt Middle School on diabetes and health and held a conference on these issues.

In our prior communication, girls from Ayacucho were more interested in the lifestyle of the girls in Nassau County and our Girl Scouts in Nassau County were interested in the effect of diabetes and nutrition. It was a great way to start a conversation and to connect with each other.

As always the challenge for both Peru and Nassau County is retaining girls and keeping them involved. Mildred Martinez recently met with seven new girls to give them an update on the 2009 Plan of Work; to arrange to communicate via email during March and June and in October and to begin planning for the conference in November.

We discussed funding limitations. We at GSNC are appreciative of our funders Winthrop University Hospital, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

For more information on how you can participate in the conversation with girls from Ayacucho as well as joining the Twinning Project, you may call Yvonne Maria Mowatt, Community Services Manager at 516.741.2550 ext. 272
