GIRL SCOUTS OF NASSAU COUNTY COLLECTING FOOD TO FEED LONG ISLAND'S HUNGRY

Garden City, NY November 1, 2011 – In 2010, an estimated 285,000 Long Islanders, including nearly 110,000 children, faced the risk of going hungry each day, according to Feeding America, a national hunger relief organization. The Girl Scouts of Nassau County are partnering with Island Harvest to help feed Long Island community members, who suffer from hunger on a daily basis. This year, their goal is to raise more than 5,000 pounds of food that will be donated to Island Harvest.

“We are excited to be partner with Island Harvest year after year for our Kids-4-Kids Food Collection,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director, Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “It pains us to know that so many families and children right in our community don’t have enough food to eat each day. We at the Girl Scouts of Nassau County want to do all that we can to help those less fortunate by putting food on their tables.”

Throughout the month of October the Girl Scouts Troops in Nassau County will coordinate a series of Kids-4-Kids food collections to help make a difference. Girl Scouts will collect, sort, pack and donate food to Island Harvest, Long Island’s Source Authority on Food Service in conjunction with Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s 3rd Annual TurkeyDrive on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 at their local branches. For their donation, Girl Scouts will receive a special patch designed for this event.

About Island Harvest

Island Harvest, Long Island’s Source Authority on Food Rescue, serves as the bridge between those who have surplus food and those who need it, supplying hundreds of community-based nonprofit organizations on Long Island with critical food support to help stem the advancing tide of hunger in our communities. Island Harvest has rescued 36 million pounds of food, supplementing more than 28 million meals, since its inception in 1992. In support of its mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, the organization is actively involved in educational and hunger awareness programs to inform the public about the insidious but often unrecognized problem of hunger here, in one of the wealthiest regions of the country, and how individuals, businesses, schools and commercial food establishments can make a difference. Island Harvest is a member of America’s Second Harvest. For more information about Island Harvest, visit www.islandharvest.org or call (516) 294-8528.
