Open Houses Scheduled for Annual Girl Scout Programs

Garden City, NY (October 7, 2013) – The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) offers a number of programs where girls have the opportunity to express themselves in different ways. These annual ongoing programs for Girl Scout and non-Girl Scout members between the grades of 3-12 help girls learn new skills and make new friends. Open Houses are scheduled to take place this month to get more information and sign up for programs.

The GSNC Ceremonial Unit is a unique opportunity where girls participate in official flag ceremonies and act as honor guards at Girl Scout events, sporting venues such as NY Met’s Citi Field and a range of functions throughout Nassau County and for community organizations. This program is offered to Girl Scout and non-Girl Scout members in grades 3-12.

Girls have the opportunity to express themselves and share personal thoughts through the Girl Speaks program. The program provides the opportunity for Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scout members to have an open discussion about issues that concern them including bullying, body image, relationships with significant others, and together they craft new projects to help other girls deal with those issues. The program is offered to girls in grades 6-12.

Arts and creativity are an important focus for GSNC as it allows girls to express themselves in an interactive way. Theatri-gals is a program for girls who love to perform and enjoy creative writing.  Girls get a chance to create short plays on relevant topics such as bullying or inclusion and perform them for the community. This program is offered to Juniors and Cadette’s and non-Girl Scout members in grades 4-8.

LEGO Robotics is a unique opportunity for girls to learn about STEM outside the classroom. With themes such as energy conservation and climate change, girls will build functional robots for the Long Island LEGO Robotics Competition. The competition allows girls to learn skills in science, technology engineering and math in a non-traditional setting. This program is offered to Girl Scout and non-Girl Scout members.

This year’s GSNC Chorus program welcomed 21 new girls. The girls have the opportunity to sing at baseball game openings and TV news stations such as Fox News Network.

Media Girls is a GSNC program for confident Girl Scouts members between 5 to 17 years old. They receive training on how to interview with members of the media for press conferences, photo shoots and public service announcements. All of these activities require a face to represent the GSNC in the eyes of the media and it is a great opportunity for girls who aspire to have a career in broadcast journalism or communications.

The GSNC Ceremonial Unit open house for girls in grades 3-12 is Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 7:15 p.m. Girls interested in Girl Speaks can attend the first meeting on October 19, 2013 at the Alumni House in the Adelphi School of Social Work, 154 Cambridge Avenue, Garden City, NY 11530. Theatri-Gals auditions will take place on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 or Wednesday, October 16, 2013 between 4p.m and 6p.m. An information night for GSNC Media Girls, offered to Girl Scout members only between the ages of 5 to 17, will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 from 7:15 p.m. -8:30 p.m. To register to attend these events, visit www.gsnc.org/program and events.
