Garden City, NY October 5, 2009 –Join the Girl Scouts of Nassau County as they honor Emily F. Franchina, President of the Nassau County Bar Association, the Broadway Mall and Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Living History Committee, during the 23rd Annual Luncheon being held on Tuesday, October 27th at the Garden City Hotel from 11:30am to 2:00pm. All proceeds from the event go towards GSNC’s financial assistance program, which makes Girl Scouting available to all girls no matter their financial situation.

“We have an exciting event in store for this year’s Annual Luncheon and appreciate the show of support and dedication to the future female leaders of our country,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County, Inc.  “We are so excited this year to be honoring Emily F. Franchina, members of our own Living History Committee and the Broadway Mall for their support of Girl Scouting and for their positive influence and contributions to Long Island.”  In addition to a performance by the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Chorus and Ceremonial Unit, attendees will have the opportunity to listen to a current Girl Scout speak about how the Girl Scouts of Nassau County has and continues to positively affect her life.

Receiving the Juliette Low Award of Distinction for her tireless efforts to enrich and give back to Long Island, Ms. Franchina, a dedicated lifetime Girl Scout of Nassau County is  an attorney specializing in Elder Law, Wills, Trusts, Estate Planning, and Estate Administration. She is president of the Nassau County Bar Association and serves on many of the organizations’ committees. Ms. Franchina has been a guest speaker on radio, and has lectured for the National Business Institute, has presented numerous lectures for various community groups and organizations. She has been a supporter of Girl Scouts of Nassau County for several years and served on the Annual Luncheon Committee since 2006.

For the past several years, The Broadway Mall has partnered with the Girl Scouts of Nassau County with their ongoing Girl Scout Cookie Program and GirlFest. This year The Broadway Mall will receive the Making a Difference for the Youth of Long Island Award. The Broadway Mall has been a part of the Hicksville community for more than 50 years. While Broadway Mall boasts more than 50 stores and restaurants, it offers much more to the community and has a reputation for hosting a wide range of family activities including its wonderful community partnership with the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. The Mall has hosted the annual cookie kick-off and cookie booth sales for the past several years and allows the Girl Scouts of Nassau County to hold GirlFest 2008 and 2009 where more than 1000 girls participated in a variety of activities; and the Way to Art exhibit where girls participating in the program displayed their artwork.

New this year at the Annual Luncheon, Girl Scouts of Nassau County will pay tribute to members of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Living History Committee as they honor them as Torch Bearers. This committee met for the first time in 1986. The adult and girl members formed this group  to collect, preserve and display objects of an historical nature related to Girl Scouting; to promote interest in and disseminate information about the history of Girl Scouting within the Council; and to provide an opportunity to spotlight the history and accomplishments of individual associations (geographical areas in Nassau County). The committee has been working tirelessly on a Living History book which will be published and available later this year. Girl Scouts of Nassau County salutes the work and contributions of these dedicated women.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County builds girls of courage, confidence and character. Girl Scouting in Nassau County creates an accepting and nurturing environment, which gives girls a chance to build character and develop leadership skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them throughout their lives: strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. With more than 22,000 girl and 7,000 adult members, Girl Scouts of Nassau County has become the preeminent organization and leading authority for girls. The organization, now in its 97th year, continues to make the world a better place one girl at a time.
