GIRL SCOUTS TO HELP LONG ISLAND’S HUNGRY
Garden City, NY October 6, 2010 – An estimated 285,000 Long Islanders, including nearly 110,000 children, face the risk of going hungry every day, according to a recent study by Feeding America, a national hunger relief organization. And according to Hunger in America 2010: The Local Report for Long Island, each week, nearly 65,000 Long Islanders are accessing the food pantries, soup kitchens and other emergency feeding programs on Long Island. The Girl Scouts of Nassau County in partnership with Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, are here to help, setting a goal of more than 6,000 pounds of food to raise to help feed Long Island’s hungry!
“We are proud to partner with Island Harvest again this year for our Kids-4-Kids Food Collection,” said Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director, Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “There are far too many families and children in our own community that go hungry everyday. We at the Girl Scouts of Nassau County want to do our part and help make a difference for those less fortunate.”
Throughout the month of October the Girl Scouts of Nassau County will coordinate a series of Kids-4-Kids food collections to help make a difference. On Saturday, October 23rd, also National Make A Difference Day, troops from across the county will come together to collect the food they had gathered during the month. From 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Girl Scout Service Center in Garden City, Girl Scouts will collect, sort, pack and donate food to Island Harvest, Long Island’s Source Authority on Food Service.
