GIRL SCOUTS OF NASSAU COUNTY RECEIVES SUPPORT FROM ASTORIA FEDERAL SAVINGS

Garden City, NY February 18, 2010 – Astoria Federal Savings recently awarded the Girl Scouts of Nassau County $7,000 to support two Girl Scout initiatives, the Girl Scouts Where You Live Program and the LEGO Robotics Program.

“We are very grateful for Astoria Federal Savings’ continued support of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County as we try to bring relevant programs and activities to girls, ” says Donna Ceravolo, Executive Director of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. “Because of their generosity, girls throughout Nassau County will be able to have the opportunity to participate in experiences they might not otherwise have been able to do.”

The Girl Scouts Where You Live program provides financial support for girls from low income communities so they can participate in Girl Scouting. This funding pays for membership and participation fees, supplies and equipment.

The LEGO Robotics project gives girls the opportunity to participate in a team that will research, design and build robots for competition. The funding allows the Girl Scouts of Nassau County to expand the number of teams from seven to ten. Since the program’s inception two years ago, approximately 150 girls have participated. In 2009, one of the Girl Scout teams won the regional competition and went on to the international competition in Atlanta, GA.

Girl Scouts of Nassau County builds girls of courage, confidence and character. Girl Scouting in Nassau County creates an accepting and nurturing environment, which gives girls a chance to build character and receive skills for success in the real world. In partnership with committed adult volunteers, girls develop qualities that will serve them throughout their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. With more than 22,000 girl and 7,000 adult members, Girl Scouts of Nassau County has become the preeminent organization and leading authority for girls. The organization, now in its 98th year, continues to make the world a better place one girl at a time.
