Rhonda based her Gold Award project on her passion for reading, by holding a book club where young adults met and discussed their different views on particular issues. Rhonda provided a comforting, safe setting for those who needed a place to be themselves and interact with others without being judged on their opinions. This left them with an open mind and new friends.
Rhonda is a junior at Locust Valley High School, where she is a member of Relay for Life, Book Club, Gay/Straight Alliance, Mock Trial, Science Olympiad, Mathletes, Leadership Group, Perspective magazine, and the volleyball team. Outside of school Rhonda participates in many volunteer projects and teaches religion at her church.

Kirsten wanted to share the benefits of dance with girls who may not have the opportunity or the resources to take dance classes. For her Gold Award project she designed and led a series of dance classes, which resulted in a recital for their families. The girls all enjoyed the art of dancing, while also gaining a great deal of self-confidence and pride.
A senior at Mepham High School, Kirsten is a member of the National Honor Society, SADD Club, and the Science Club. She is a Sunday school teacher and a member of Venture Crew, a high adventure and community service group. She will attend the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Brittany’s Gold Award Project was inspired by her love for kids and her own experiences with
doctors. Knowing how scared a post-surgery patient can be, Brittany decided to create Spanish/English coloring books for the sick children at the hospitals. The coloring books outlined what children should expect when having surgery, so they would be less afraid.
Brittany graduated from Massapequa High School in 2010. She attended track camp for two summers and will be majoring in education and foreign language in college

Jenna wanted to share her love of badminton with younger students, and started her Gold Award project with a local elementary school, where she taught grades 4-6 the rules of badminton. She wanted to give kids the opportunity to learn a new sport. Jenna’s project was a huge success, introducing a new group of students to the sport through her workshops, which were enjoyed by both the students and the physical education teachers.
Jenna is a 2010 graduate of Mepham High School, where she was active in the National Honor Society, badminton, volleyball, and basketball teams. She has just completed her freshman year at Adelphi, where she is the recipient of their Gold Award Scholarship.

Bonnie’s passion for reading was encouraged
at an early age. To share that passion with others, she started her Gold Award project with a book club, where children in grades 4-6 in her community could do some fun activities while reading books of their choice. The North Bellmore Public Library was the site of her club, and through the weeks, children in the program bonded as if they were part of a team and became enthusiastic readers.
Bonnie is active in the track team and is a member of the Spanish Honor Society and SADD at Mepham High School, where she is a junior. She also studies yoga and takes lessons in Japanese.

As an animal lover, Amber created her Gold Award project, “Their One True Place”, to address the issue of unwanted animals and overcrowded shelters. She organized an adopta-thon at the Freeport Animal Shelter to help find unwanted pets a new home. Everyone was invited to come and visit the animals. Amber organized and ran the two-day event, where she collected food and supplies for the pets. Homes were found for four dogs during her event and many in the community were made aware of this small animal shelter.

Connie wanted to share her love of history with the children in hercommunity through her Gold Award project, “Education Through the Years.” Working with a local historian, Connie used her creative side and designed a history picture book for kids to read. This taught the young people in
Merrick all about their town’s history. Connie showed kids that learning history can be fun and interesting at the same time.
Connie is a 2010 graduate of Calhoun High School, where she participated in Art Club, Softball, Yorker Club, and Key Club. Connie is a summer camp counselor at Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Camp Blue Bay. She is currently studying at SUNY Potsdam.

Theresa’s Gold Award Project, “The Ten Commandment Garden” taught the children in
her community environmental values along with spiritual values through the planting of a garden for their church. The garden was split into ten sections, each section representing one of the
Ten Commandments. This not only taught the children how to improve the environment but also reinforced the messages of scripture. Through Theresa’s efforts, the church looked heavenly.
Theresa will be graduating from Wellington C. Mepham High School, where she is active in Senior Experience Internship program, SADD, Culture Club, and the school band and Literary Club. Outside school, Theresa teaches Sunday school, Bible School, and dance to young children. She enjoys softball and dance and participates in charity walks. She will attend St. Joseph’s College.

Being a member of her high school theatre company for six years, Cara wanted to provide
young students a fun introduction to acting as
well as a chance to give back to their community.
To make this happen, she assembled the “Sixth Grade Showcase,” a short musical that she ran along with a food drive. Cara wanted to teach students about the production process and prepare them for future performances. Everyone
helped out with the food drive which benefited a local soup kitchen.
Cara, a 2010 graduate of Carle Place High School, was a member of the Honor Society, President of Tri-m Music Honor Society, and Secretary of the Spanish Honor Society. She was a stage manager for her theatre company and involved with the women’s choir and ensemble singers. Outside of school, Cara volunteers at the Interfaith Nutrition Network and is a chemistry instructor for young children. She is the founder, director, and producer of the Carle Place Student Community Theatre Company. Cara just completed her freshman year at the University of Southern California.

“Excel Academically and Embrace Your Religion” is the title of Am’aris’s Gold Award project, which
helped young children and adults get more in touch with their faith. Am’aris realized that church services are not always interesting to children. She then had the idea to take the children into a separate room and have them read bible stories. This not only improved their reading skills, but also their knowledge of their own religion. Am’aris met with the Youth Ministry group and they came up with different religious learning activities for the kids.
Am’aris is a 2010 graduate of St. Dominic High School. Outside school, she was the treasurer of The Jack and Jill Teen Executive Board and the Correspondence Secretary. Am’aris has completed her freshman year at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia.

Krysten, along with her project partner, Katherine, provided a six-week session of arts and crafts classes to children in their community. They thought it was a great way for kids to keep
busy, away from trouble, and to express themselves in a positive way. The children were taught different art skills that they can carry with them in life.
Krysten is graduating this spring from Kellenberg High School, where she was active in Blue and Gold, Chorus, Jazz Chorus, and the Library Service Club. She assists with a younger Girl Scout Troop, volunteers for Purple and Gold and teaches piano lessons. She will attend La Salle University.

Giving children a safe place to explore their
creative art skills was the goal of Katherine and her partner, Krysten, Gold Award project. Katherine got to utilize her creative talents and skills during this project helping the kids with their crafts. The girls provided the young students with a free program where they could have fun expressing themselves in a positive way through art.
Katherine is a senior at Carle Place High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Math Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society and Key club. She also participates in theater, chorus, culture vultures, and the volleyball team. She will attend Fairfield University.

“Look Good, Feel Good” was the aim of Amanda’s Gold Award project. She wanted young girls and women with developmental disabilities to feel that special lift that a new accessory can give. Collecting items that would be thrown away, Amanda put her creative fashion sense to work and made beautiful scarves, pocketbooks, jewelry, hats, and more. She recruited volunteers to help create the accessories, and then visited the resident homes to distribute them. She also gave some fashion tips to the residents.
Amanda graduated from Bethpage High School in 2010, where she was the captain of the track team and a member of the tutoring program. She has completed her freshman year at Marist College where she is majoring in fashion design.

Seeing her little cousin struggling with his visits to the hospital inspired Jenine to help other sick children through her Gold Award project “Cheering up Sick Kids.” Jenine thought of ways to distract the patients by creating a coloring
book that addressed the children’s feelings
about their hospital experiences. Not only did this help the children’s stay, but she also made an impact on their parents, who received a helpful resource book Jenine created to familiarize them with the area surrounding the hospital. The children, families and staff at the Cohen Children’s Medical Center at North Shore were very grateful.
Jenine, a senior at Bethpage High School is in the Maritme Fitness Club and Philosophy Club. She is a brown belt in Kenpo Karate and will attend the University of Delaware.

Lauren and her sister Shannon teamed up on
their Gold Award project “Theodore Roosevelt
Sanctuary Education Room Makeover.” The goal of their project was to create a clean, comfortable learning atmosphere for children and their families. The girls got to work by cleaning the room and purchasing material to build and paint
new book shelves for the room. They created
fun educational games to teach their community about wild life. Lauren and her sister supplied visitors to the nature sanctuary with an inviting learning space and interesting activities that support that learning.
Lauren is a 2010 graduate of Bethpage High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society and track team. She is now a student at C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.

Working with her sister Lauren, Shannon’s goal for their Gold Award Project “Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary Education Room Makeover” was to provide the community a place to have fun, while learning about different animals in the outdoor environment. A makeover of the physical space was augmented with a host of new activities created by the girls. Young visitors to this room now have a pleasant space and lots of fun choices for learning about the local wildlife environment.

Colby’s Gold Award project “Historic Costume
Design,’ was created to help the staff at The Old Bethpage Village Restoration. By putting her sewing skills to work, Colby made numerous new historical costume pieces. Colby researched 19th century styles and fabrics for historical accuracy
before starting, and she held sewing workshops where volunteers created many petticoats and aprons for donation. She was able to give her community the satisfaction of helping a local heritage site, while providing the OBVR with a new and improved wardrobe collection.
Colby is a 2010 graduate of Bethpage High School, where she was dance captain and an officer of the Drama Club. She now attends the University of Connecticut.

Maria remembered enjoying the volunteer work she did as a young Girl Scout at the Hempstead Plains. For her Gold Award project, Maria decided to create a program where Girl Scouts could earn a badge by visiting the Hempstead Plains. After Maria’s thorough research, she also designed self guides with pictures of the plants and animals in the area. Maria also beautified the prairie ecosystem by cleaning, refurbishing the sign posts and kiosk, and planting on the plains. The Friends of Hempstead Plains now have new
resources and an improved site at which to accomplish their mission of education, thanks to Maria.
Maria graduated in 2010 from Bethpage High School and now attends Hofstra University.

An aspiring veterinarian, Kelly knew that young children, while eager to have a pet, may not realize the responsibility that goes with it. Her Gold Award project, “Pet Care”, was designed to teach children how to care for pets. Kelly created a PowerPoint presentation, geared to young children, as well as a coloring book, word search, and an origami craft, all of which made learning about pet care fun.
Kelly is a senior at East Meadow High School, and a member of the Science, Italian, and National Honor Societies, and the Future Business Leaders of America. She also volunteers at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter and East Meadow Animal Hospital. Kelly will attend Hofstra University in the fall, where she is the recipient of a Gold Award Scholarship.

Having a younger brother with special needs inspired Melissa’s idea for her Gold Award project “A Different Mind.” Melissa’s thorough research on Special Education helped her create a bullying workshop for teens in her community. Her workshop educated students about people with special needs in an effort to create understanding and stop bullying. Melissa wanted to get the point across that just because someone is different it does not make it right to bully them.
A senior at East Meadow High School, Melissa is a member of the National Honor Society and is the Co-President of the French Honor Society Club, and volunteers with the Special Education Teacher Association. She will attend SUNY Cortland.

A birthday is an exciting and special event, but not everyone has the luxury of a celebration. For Sara’s Gold Award Project, she decided to give
homeless children a birthday party. In order to gather support for her idea, Sara researched homelessness statistics and created an educational presentation for her community. After gathering donations, Sara created a game booklet, and then put together birthday boxes with all the supplies needed for a party. These boxes were delivered to the shelter for use on any child’s special day.
Sara is a senior at W.T. Clarke High School, where she is a member of the English Honor Society and the President of the Spanish Honor Society. Sara earned the Presidential Service Award for her volunteer work. She plans to attend Nassau Community College where she will study nursing.

Inspired to be a dentist, Elizabeth designed her Gold Award project to educate young children on the importance of maintaining dental hygiene. By presenting PowerPoints, display boards, and a demonstration with a soda-stained hard boiled egg to show the effects of not brushing your teeth, she kept the children interested in learning proper brushing techniques. From her demonstrations they saw that brushing regularly is extremely important in order to prevent plaque and cavities, which no kid (or parent) wants.
Elizabeth is a senior at East Meadow High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society, and the kick line. She volunteers outside of school by teaching young students dance and cheering. Elizabeth is a Gold Award Scholarship recipient and will attend the University of Delaware.

An interest in the marine environment that is so important to Long Island gave Victoria the inspiration for her Gold Award project. Victoria gave a presentation called “Protect the Ocean!” to children and their parents. Her talk focused on the importance of recycling and not polluting the ocean with trash. She also created fun coloring pictures and word search activities for the children to do while she went into greater depth with the parents about this serious topic.
Victoria is a junior at East Meadow High School, where she plays the viola for the orchestra and participates on the kick line team. She also is a member of the National Honor Society and the French Honor Society. She also donates time to teach young students dance and cheer.

Shweta wanted to educate the younger generation about how important recycling is for their environment. This led her to develop her Gold Award project, “Going Green.” Shweta
based her series of presentations on the three “R’s” of the environment: reduce, reuse, and recycle. She had the children do a fun, environmentally friendly craft while she educated them about this important topic.
A senior at East Meadow High School, Shweta is a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Model Congress, Future Business Leaders of America, Language other than English Honor Society, Science Honor Society, and Environmental Club. She plans to attend the University at Buffalo, where she is the recipient of a Girl Scout Gold Award Scholarship.

Danielle created a project she called “Never Forget” that concentrated on the Holocaust, with a correlation to racism and anti-Semitism as they
exist today. Her aim was to educate her community about how they could make a difference by standing up and stopping these intolerant acts. She did this by delivering a series of presentations, designing influential posters, and creating a video on the subject.
A senior at East Meadow High School, Danielle is a member of the Gay-Straight Alliance and the tech crew. She is also a member of the Teen Advisory Board at the East Meadow Public Library. Danielle will attend SUNY at Oswego in the fall.

As an aspiring Music Therapist, Samara wanted to share her talent with residents at a nursing care facility in her community. Samara visited the home several times working one-on-one with different residents, playing music that evoked those nostalgic happy days past. Samara utilized her creative side by making instruments out of recycled goods so the senior citizens could produce their own music. Not only did Samara fill the nursing home with beautiful music, but also made great memories for all the residents.
Samara is a senior at Lynbrook High School, where she is active in the Drama club, Tri-M Honor Society, Class Night, Jazz Band, and the track team. Samara is also an active member of her temple. She will attend Molloy College.

A one room schoolhouse in Hempstead is an important part of the history of education on Long Island, and Brieonna’s Gold Award project was designed to raise awareness of this schoolhouse and its role in local history. Researching and
developing a presentation, she visited local schools and spoke to the classes to educate them about their local history. She hoped that her project would create enough interest in the schoolhouse among the students and their parents to convince local officials to allocate funding to preserve and restore this historic building.
Brieonna is a senior at Malverne High School, where she is active in Marching Band, science research, and the Science Olympiad. Brieonna will attend Virginia Commonwealth University in the fall, with plans to major in biology.

Sarah’s Gold Award project, “For the Memories
Forgotten,” was inspired by two family members who have Alzheimer’s disease. She wanted to help raise awareness of the disease by hosting a softball tournament at a local park. Many residents of Sarah’s community came down for a fun filled day of games but at the same time learned about the disease and what it does to the person’s mind and body through posters that Sarah created and displayed at the event. She also arranged for a representative from the Long
Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association to be at the event to answer questions and give additional information to the community.
Sarah will be graduating this spring from Malverne High School, where she is captain of the varsity softball team, and a member of the National, Science and Tri-M Honor Societies. In the fall, she will be a freshman in the honors program at Molloy College.

For Sara’s Gold Award Project, she worked with Melanie to develop a 6-session arts enrichment program “Camp Snow Much Fun” for middle school students. The students learned acting, singing, and dancing skills and performed at a Grand Finale event that capped the program. Both the performers and their parents were asking for the camp to continue on. Along with teaching new skills, the girls were able to collect nonperishable food items at the performance, which helped the hungry.
Sara is a senior at Floral Park High Memorial High School, where she is a member of the Animation Club and the Teen Library Review. On weekends Sara volunteers for the Valley Stream Cat Rescue and tutors a student with special needs. Sara will be attending Kutztown University in September.

Melanie utilized her passion for dance, scrap booking, and working with children in her Gold Award Project “Camp Snow Much Fun.” Along with her partner, Sara, she organized an arts enrichment program for young children. As the children worked on their art projects and practiced for the Grand Finale performance, Melanie encouraged them to use their free time (and resources) wisely. At every session, the children brought in canned goods for a local food pantry.
Melanie is a senior at Floral Park Memorial High School, where she is involved in the band, dance team, student council, and Pride of Floral Park Committee. She is also a part of her Church’s Youth Ministry Group. She will major in Education at C.W. Post, where she is the recipient of a Gold Award Scholarship.

Kiana addressed the important issue of driving safety for her Gold Award project “It’s a Girl’s Road.” Using her organizational and public
speaking skills, she was able to put together a workshop for teen girls at which they learned how to drive safely, and to understand the consequences of drinking and/or texting while driving.
Kiana is a senior at Freeport High School, where she is the Vice President of Student Government and the President of her graduating class. This fall she will attend college at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, where she plans to major in Psychology.

Nicole felt that the auto repair shop is still
somewhat of a man’s world. In order to make girls more savvy about those issues that can arise with a vehicle, she created her Gold Award
project “It’s a Girl’s Road.” Through her sessions
on auto repair and maintenance, she showed girls and women (and even some boys) in her community the basics of car maintenance, what items to always carry in your vehicle, and how to be a knowledgeable consumer if your car does end up at the repair shop.
Nicole is a junior at Freeport High School, where she is on the tennis team, manages the lacrosse team, and is a member of the Italian club.

Andrea wanted to use her Spanish speaking
skills to help young students learn something of the Spanish language and culture. Volunteering at an afterschool program, Andrea worked with
the students three days per week to help them learn Spanish through storytelling and fun activities. She chose books and stories that the children would enjoy, while they were learning new words and gaining an appreciation of another culture. To add to the learning, Andrea also chose crafts for the children, and checked their progress through the worksheets they completed.

Heather focused her Gold Award project on Hour Children, a nonprofit organization that takes care of children whose mothers are in prisons. Heather wanted to provide the children with a comfortable setting where they could relax and play games. She cleaned, painted, and planted all around the courtyard to make it feel homier to the kids. Heather along with people from her community donated books, handmade pillowcases, toys, and gifts. To remind everyone from Hour Children how many children’s lives they have touched, each child painted their own brick on the wall.
Heather will be graduating from Sacred Heart Academy this spring, where she is involved with Red and Gold Dance, National Honor Society, and the President of the Catholic League. Heather is on the youth advisory board at the Mary Brennan INN, tutors, and gives dance lessons. She will attend the University of Maryland in the fall.

Dana’s Gold Award project, “Books in a Bag – The Joy of Reading a Good Book” was designed for children at the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Long Island and at the Interfaith Nutritional Network’s emergency shelters. Dana created backpacks which included a book, audio book, games, puzzles, and a story outline, to help the children relieve stress and keep busy. Instead of having to worry about what’s going on in the shelter they can get wrapped up in their imagination reading the books in their backpacks.
Dana is a junior at Garden City High School, where she is a member of the Spanish Club, Miracle Club, and golf team. Dana also volunteers at her church and with other community groups.

With Jacqueline’s strong management and organizational skills, she came up with her Gold Award project, “Recycle. Reuse.Restep.” Getting
two jobs done in one, Jacqueline decided to
educate her community on the importance of recycling and helping those in need. Through her educational efforts, she gathered an abundance of wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and crutches which, instead of ending up in a landfill, were donated to those who needed them at the United Cerebral Palsy Organization.
Jacqueline is a junior at Garden City High School, where she is involved with Peer Aids, Masquers and International Thespian Society, and the Chamber Orchestra. She volunteers at St. Anne’s by cooking and delivering meals to families in need.

Hunger on Long Island is a huge issue according to Hayley, who reached out to various groups in her community to educate them about this problem. She researched the topic and shared facts and statistics with her audiences. Through her hard work and efforts she was able to encourage people to give back to their community. Hayley’s talks resulted in donations of food that she delivered to the Mary Brennan Inn in Hempstead.
A junior at Garden City High School, Hayley is the color guard captain of her marching band, and is also involved with chorus and the fashion club. She is a member of her Church’s Choir and her Community Theater.

“I Can See Clearly Now” is the title of Brittany’s Gold Award project, which taught young children about the importance of eye care and the challenges faced by the visually impaired. Through a variety of activities, Brittany had the children use all their senses except for sight.
This proved to be difficult, but made an important point. All of the students who attended her workshops learned about various devices that assist the visually impaired, but agreed that it is most important to care for your vision. She was also able to collect and recycle used eyeglasses to help both the planet and those in need.
Brittany is a junior at Garden City High School, where she is a member of the National Honor Society, Miracle Club, Key Club, and the Italian Club.

Emily started a “Pajama Program” to educate the students in her town about the needs of homeless children. Enlisting the support of the high school’s Key Club, she ran a day of service event at the middle school, and raised awareness of the issue. Through her efforts, Emily collected
over 400 pairs of new pajamas and 450 bedtime story books to be donated to a local shelter, as well as recruiting a new generation of students to continue this initiative.
Emily graduated from Garden City High School in 2010. She was involved in key club, Voices for Africa, Cancer Society and St. Joseph’s Youth Group. Emily attends Siena College.

Prevent bullying and cyber-bullying among
children was the goal of Katherine’s Gold Award
project “Stop Bullying Now!” Through a variety of presentations and skits, Katherine had students from all grades sharing their stories with one another about their experiences with bullying.
This created a stronger bond between the children and showed them how to handle bullies. The children left with self-confidence and some strategies to help them prevent bullying.

Cara wanted to share her love of music with
younger students. Many kids do not have the opportunity to play an instrument, so for Cara’s project she wanted everyone to have a chance to play. She had instruments refurbished for donation to children who are less fortunate. Some kids who have the means and the instruments do not always take advantage. Cara held presentations and showed videos to illustrate how fulfilling it is to play an instrument. Cara was happy to show the importance of music to a younger audience, and she will continue to hold presentations in the schools in her community.

Carley sought to educate as many people as she could about the need for blood and bone marrow donations and how this generous gift can save lives. Working with “Be the Match” Foundation, she attended community events and explained the importance of donating. Once a potential donor expressed interest, they began the process to be entered into a national registry. The impact of Carley’s project could be felt well beyond her community, as new donors on Long Island could
be helping to save lives across the country.

Ali wanted to bring her community together by starting a “Lending Library” at their town pool. Recycled books would be available for anyone to take out and enjoy while discussing the stories with others. Ali not only was being environmentally friendly by recycling books, but she also gave the people in her community the

beautiful music was Alexandra’s goal for her Gold Award project “An Afternoon of Music.” She recruited fellow members of the Garden City Chamber Orchestra to visit the residents of the home for a series of afternoon musical performances. They played a variety of selections, and gave the residents a pleasant break from their daily routines, while reminding them of the joys that music can bring.

Colleen knew that many community members donated trees, benches, and other items to honor
a loved one. She also knew that it was often
difficult to locate these items in the nine acres of the preserve. Utilizing her organizational and technological skills, Colleen created a map of the property, so that people could conveniently find what they were looking for. She also designed an informational brochure for the site.

Erin’s Gold Award project addressed the familiar issue of recycling, but brought a new perspective. In doing research around the issue, Erin learned that bottle caps made from plastic #5 (polypropylene) cannot be recycled along with
the bottles. She educated her community about this fact, and promoted a program that would collect the caps, so that they too, could be properly recycled, instead of being put into landfills.

To achieve her goal of establishing a recycling program at Glen Cove City Stadium, Katie needed to educate the young children who use the stadium for their sports teams. She first set up recycling bins around the stadium and then she spoke to the coaches and their teams to inform them about her plan. With their support and help, the stadium was cleaner and there were fewer recyclables thrown into landfills. The stadium is now a more eco-friendly place to enjoy outdoor sports.

Knowing that peer pressure can be extremely
difficult, Amy thought it was necessary to raise awareness of teens in her community about how dangerous drugs are to your mind and body. Amy
used her skills in public speaking by talking to health classes in a middle school about the dangers of drugs. As a result, many students and parents attended the Battle of the Bands event organized by Amy and Katherine for their Gold Award project. This event showed that drugs are not needed for a good time.

The simple idea that proper hygiene can help us avoid illness was the spark for Julianne’s Gold Award project, “Hand Washing Saves Lives.” She wanted to inform kids in her community that
hand washing and cleanliness correlate to better health. Julianne worked with younger students and taught them proper hand-washing technique, and brought along a special UV light to show them the germs on their hands. She also provided
the youngsters with educational, fun coloring pages to reinforce her message.
Julianne graduated in 2010 from Farmingdale High School, where she was a varsity swimmer. Julianne just completed her freshman year at Alfred University, where she is a recipient of a Gold Award Scholarship.

“Sensory Garden” to enhance the cognitive and social skills of the residents of a local assisted living facility. By choosing a variety of plants that would appeal to all the senses, she created an area where the residents can gather to enjoy nature and socialize with each other and with family members when they visit. The garden was designed to accommodate residents with physical limitations, with raised planters so that all can enjoy caring for the plants.

After each treatment the children would receive a toy which got their mind off of their sickness and put a smile on their face. Jessica also created a brochure to let others know of the need to help these kids.

Victoria wanted to bring hope and happiness
to the young cancer patients of the New York Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. For her Gold Award project she worked with Jessica to lift up the spirits of sick children by spending time with them doing crafts and giving them toys. Victoria created craft kits from donated materials. She also utilized her public speaking skills by speaking to community leaders, getting the word out about their project, and recruiting others to keep it going.

Melanie wanted to introduce fresh produce,
composting and an overall enthusiasm for horticulture to her high school. Her Gold Award project “The Green Growers” brought together the students and faculty at Herricks High School
as they created an organic garden in one of the courtyards. Under Melanie’s direction, they removed concrete, built a greenhouse and enriched the soil with organic compost so that fruits and vegetables could flourish. To further beautify the space, she had the Art Honor Society paint a mural in the courtyard.

Concerned that young teens in her high school were not being educated about safe sex and domestic violence, Stephanie took action. She thought it was important that her peers be informed on this significant topic. For her Gold Award project, Stephanie created a petition to bring to the school’s administration. She approached the students and their parents to lend their support, and received both support and resistance. While the curriculum at her high school has not changed, Stephanie was able to shed light on the issue of domestic violence through an article in her school newspaper. “Santa’s Angels” was the name of Shannon’s
Gold Award project. Working side by side with Kristina, Shannon wanted to provide a joyful holiday season for families who could not afford gifts. Once they found families that needed help, they then reached out to educate others about the importance of giving. To bring the message to younger students, the girls ran a series of workshops to make holiday cards, at which they promoted the importance of volunteering to help others. Through their efforts, many youngsters learned the value of giving your time, and more than fifty families had a brighter holiday season.

This not only helped the environment, it also helped to stretch families’ budgetsduring these tough economic times.

Kelly created “Girl Scout” vests for the ladies, and they were thrilled to reminisce about their Girl Scout experiences with today’s Girl Scouts.

For her Gold Award project, “Dividing Our Time to Add Unity to our Community,” Karen wanted to help the families of the less fortunate receive the education they deserve. Karen also held a school supply drive, donated hundreds of items to those in need, and organized an all-day math fair for kids.
Karen graduated in 2010 from Division Avenue High School, where she was a section leader of the marching band (percussion). Karen just completed her freshman year at Mount Saint Mary College.

Stephanie wanted to educate others about the situation of children in the foster care system. Her research, coupled with interviews of social workers in this field helped her to create a brochure to inform the public. Her pajama party will become an annual event, as the English department of her high school will continue it as a tie-in to the reading of A Child Called “It”.

For Kristin’s Gold Award project, “Project P.A.W.S. (Pets All Want Safety),” she gave
presentations to inform her community how important it is to have the right safety equipment for animals in the event of a fire. With help from her veterinarian, she gathered pet oxygen masks to keep on fire rescue vehicles. Through her efforts, pets in her community now have a much
better chance of surviving a fire.

Susanne was concerned with the lack of knowledge many young adults have about proper nutrition and food choices. For her Gold Award project, Susanne decided to focus on the middle
school students in her community in her effort to impress upon them that poor choices made now could have long-term effects on their health. Susanne put on presentations with helpful healthy eating tips and created a cookbook that featured meals that were not only good tasting, but good for you.

As a volunteer at Camp ANCHOR, Keri had the idea to create her Gold Award project “Helping Hands.” The camp serves children who have different disabilities, including some who do not speak. Keri decided it was important for her and
other volunteers to learn the American Sign Language. Keri arranged for a trained teacher in ASL to come to the camp and teach all of the volunteers some basic sign language, and augmented the lessons with handouts. These new skills improved the communication and relationships between the campers and volunteers.

Crystal will be graduating this spring from Manhasset High School, where she is a member of the debate team, Green Club, Nutrition Club, and the Newspaper Club. She is also the cellist of the Chamber Orchestra and is on the varsity track and soccer teams. Crystal sings in her church’s choir and volunteers at St. Francis Hospital. “Swim 4 Life”, was designed to empower and
inform underprivileged children ages 8-10 about water safety and proper nutrition. She chose to work with a group of sixteen students at the EOC (Economic Opportunity Center) in Manhasset-Great Neck. These children were taught the basic strategies of lifesaving techniques They can use in the water. Not only did they learn helpful tips in the water, but also tips on what to eat (and what not to eat) to stay healthy.
Katie is a junior at Sacred Heart Academy, where she is a member of Student Council, Orchestra, Catholic League, Math team, Science Olympiad, and the swim team. Katie is a swimmer on the Long Island Express USA swim team. She is also a CCD teacher at St. Thomas the Apostle.

Laura created her Gold Award Project to help the children at the Hempstead Boys and Girls Club gain a love for reading. Knowing that reading is a skill directly related to a student’s educational success Laura designed a series of workshops that used Greek mythology and Japanese Anime among other topics, to pique the children’s interest. In addition, Laura and her community donated 500 books for the children of the Hempstead Boys and Girls Club.

A pianist for the past thirteen years, Michelle
wanted to share her passion and talent with
senior citizens at a local nursing home. She wanted the residents to feel the excitement she
feels while playing and she thought this would both entertain them and provide an additional activity for them. Michelle was patient and worked with everyone who wanted to learn to play piano. The home is now full of beautiful music, made by the new pianists-in-residence.
Michelle is a senior at Portledge School, where she is on the tennis, fencing, and softball teams. She is also on the school newspaper staff and participates in mock trial. Outside of school she volunteers at a doctor’s office and is a peer mentor for autistic teens. She will attend Trinity College.

Childhood obesity is the concern of Stefani’s
Gold Award project, “Become a Nutrition Detective.” Stefani designed a program to educate the children in her community about
the need for proper nutrition and daily exercise. She designed a unique health and fitness program and conducted the curriculum at a local afterschool program in her community. The
hands-on activities she designed made learning about a healthy lifestyle fun.
Stefani is a senior at Manhasset High School, where she is a member of the Music Honor Society, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, theatre, vocal jazz and select vocalist, and the school’s newspaper. Jean’s Gold Award Project “Building a Love for Science,” was designed to foster an appreciation of the sciences among an underserved student
population. Jean presented a series of hands-on classes to the children at the EOC (Economic Opportunity Center). The children chose her science classes over arts and crafts, demonstrating the beginnings of a love for science. Jeannie also set up a boat tour of the Manhasset Bay where the students learned about local marine life and were able to collect and study sea creatures.

“Educate yourself: Breaking down the Barriers on Physical Disabilities” is the title
of Brianna’s Gold Award project. Working with different non-profit organizations, Brianna held an event where everyone
in her community was welcomed to receive information on physical disabilities,
such as missing limbs, deafness, blindness or paralysis. People left Brianna’s event with a better understanding of and respect for those who live with physical disabilities.
Brianna is a senior at Massapequa High School, where she is the Vice President of the Key Club. Brianna volunteers at the Bubba Foundation which gives support to children with physical disabilities. She plans to attend Mount Saint Mary College in the fall.

After sustaining a neck injury in a recent auto accident, Brooke thought it was extremely
important to inform everyone in her community about car safety. “Protect A Life: Passenger Seatbelt for All” was the name of Brooke’s project. She held presentations for children and parents, talking about her car accident experience and giving tips on being safe while in a moving vehicle. In addition to her presentations, Brooke also created a blog about car safety tips that people could be read by people all over the world.
Brooke is a senior at Massapequa High School, where she is a member of the Character Education Club. On the weekends Brooke volunteers at Winthrop University Hospital. She will attend Fairfield University.

Kelsey’s Gold Award Project, “Building for the
Better: Farming for the Disabled,” benefitted the volunteers at Sophia Garden in Amityville. Through Kelsey’s strenuous work she was able to build two tables for the garden’s elderly and disabled volunteers. The volunteers are now able to sit comfortably while washing the organic produce, and are extremely grateful for the relaxing atmosphere Kelsey provided them.

The goal of Krystyna’s Gold Award project was to raise awareness in her community of the importance of recycling. Krystyna gave a presentation at Joseph S. Saladino’s Marine and Outdoor Recreation Expo called “Do you know what’s in the Marine Envirnoment?: Pollution Invasion.” She informed the community how harmful pollution can be to animals by displaying poster boards and pictures. She also produced a brochure with tips on reducing plastic waste.
Krystyna is a senior at Massapequa High School where she volunteers as a tutor and is a member of SADD and SETA Club. She also interns at an orthodontic office. She was accepted into the Health Studies program at Farmingdale Sate College.

Morgan wanted to inform her community about the benefits and the rewards of volunteering. Targeting children aged 7 to 12 years old and their parents, she created a documentary film to give them ideas about how they can get involved in their communities. Marie’s Gold Award project “Animal Shelters:
The Forgotten Pets”, benefitted the people and animals at shelters in Freeport and the Town of Oyster Bay. As an animal lover, she decided to educate the community about the benefits of adopting pets from shelters through an article in
the local newspaper and the creation of an
educational brochure. To further help the shelter animals, she built a cat tower and whelping box which she donated to them, and she coordinated a drive for pet food and supplies.

Working with her project partner, Nicole, Jessica created a respite program for children with special needs, since there is no scouting-type group for disabled children in her area. This program gave the children a safe comfortable place to socialize and have fun together. Jessica

Meaghan was impressed with the work of Habitat for Humanity and wished to spread awareness of the organization and its benefits to low-income families. Her Gold Award project “Affordable Housing: Operation Green House” also allowed her to add her own spin to their program. She created a brochure to educate the community, and also hosted an event to highlight the need for affordable housing on Long Island. To add a more personal touch, Meaghan created “Welcome Home” kits (flower boxes and all the supplies needed to grow their own flowers) for new homeowners in the program.

She gave her peers the self-confidence to express themselves through art in front of their families, friends and the community.

For Ava’s Gold Award Project, “Birds and Butterflies,” she canvassed the community to reach girls with special needs, and then worked with them to build stepping stones and bird houses which were donated to the William Floyd Estate historical site. The girls gained confidence in trying new activities, creating something useful for others, and making new friendships. Ava and the children were able to provide the garden with some welcome decorative and practical additions.

Erica wanted to share her passion for magic with young children in her community. Erica’s Gold Award project “An Introduction to Magic”, consisted of a four-week program where she met with students from grades 3 and 4 and taught them several magic tricks. The children put on a show for their family and friends, performing their magic tricks with self-assurance and pride.

A concerned athlete, Kristina decided to design her Gold Award project “Healthy Habits through Nutrition and Exercise,” for young girls in her community. It bothered Kristina that today’s children spent too much time in front of the computer and television. She held an event where she gave girls the chance to try different
kinds of sports and exercises. They learned it can be fun and rewarding (and healthy) to be active.
Kristina is a senior at Oceanside High School, where she participates in the Photo Club, school newspaper, Kayak Club, science research, and varsity cross country. Outside school, Kristina is a volunteer tutor. She will attend Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia in the fall.

Courtney wanted to show young children in her community that recycling can be fun and that what might be trash to some could be made into something beautiful and useful. Her Gold Award project “Recyclable Arts and Crafts” consisted of
a series of workshops where the children and she would design creative works of art out of items that might otherwise be thrown away. The children learned the importance of recycling, but Courtney also taught them that using your imagination can have amazing results.

Katie’s Gold Award project “Painting Workshop” consisted of an eight week series of art classes, where she taught young students to create their own masterpiece through the proper use of acrylic paints and mixing colors. The children
learned new techniques and skills that they utilized in making their art pieces which they proudly displayed at home. Katie gave the students confidence in their artistic abilities that they can build upon in the future.

For Meghin’s Gold Award project, she set up an Olympics-style event for children with special needs. She saw that these kids could not participate in the “battle of the classes” at her school, so it was important to her to give them that experience, which is such a big part of high school life. Meghin designed a “mini-battle” event
for these students, that consisted of fun games and activities. All of the special needs students had a blast and they could not stop smiling.

Catherine wanted to share her passion for dance with younger girls in her community. She knew that some girls do not have the opportunity to take dance classes, but would gain in self-esteem and confidence if they had the chance to perform.
Catherine offered a series of classes to third grade girls at a local elementary school. Girls learned to stretch and warm up prior to exercise, and were exposed to ballet, jazz and tap. Once the girls perfected the dance, they put on a performance for their families and friends. The girls experienced the sense of accomplishment at learning a new skill and boosted their confidence.

Putting her artistic and organizational skills to work, Cheyanne came up with her Gold Award project, “Craft for a Smile.” Cheyanne was concerned about young children who come with their parents to their hospital treatments. To get the kids’ minds off of their sick parents, she created kits so they could do arts and crafts projects. All the children enjoyed being creative by making their own art, and the activity also helped to reduce stress levels for both the children and their parents.
Cheyanne is currently a junior at Oceanside High School, where she is a member of BOCES and the bowling team. Outside school, Cheyanne is part of the Viking Pastry Guild and enjoys horseback riding.

Aspiring to become a reading teacher, Morgan
wanted to share her passion for reading with the children in her community. For her Gold Award project, she held a book club at the local library for kids of all ages. She let the children pick out a book of their interest, and she showed them that
reading can be educational and fun, by creating a craft activity to accompany the reading. Along with her book club, Morgan gathered books to be donated to the Mercy Hospital Pediatric Center.
Morgan is a junior at Oceanside High School, where she is active in the marching band and BOCES. She also serves as a counselor at a local summer recreation program, and plays softball.

wanted to share her passion for fitness by holding a Fitness and Health Program for younger girls in her community. Through her Gold Award Project, she held sessions where the girls learned fun, useful exercises along with tips on
eating healthy. The girls were able to leave the program with new knowledge of how to best take care of their bodies. These new skills will help them feel confident and give them the skills to help reduce stress now, and as they get older.

created workshops designed to educate children on a healthy lifestyle. The girls taught the students good eating habits and how to make healthy after-school snacks. At each workshop they did a fun Zumba dance, which the children enjoyed so much they didn’t even realize it was a workout. Jessica and her partner created brochures with healthy eating habits and exercising tips, which were distributed at the end of the workshops.

Emily’s Gold Award Project, “Dance Crew” provided boys and girls ages 6-8, a fun and active Saturday activity. This was not only a fun
day for the children, but it gave the parents some free time of their own. Each child was asked to bring a new pair of socks to the classes, which were donated to a local charity. The classes culminated with a recital where the kids could
show off their new moves.

As an athlete, Danielle wanted to guide other young athletes in the right direction by helping them build their physical and mental fitness. Children’s poor eating habits and lack of exercise were the main concerns of Christina’s Gold Award Project, “Happy Healthy Living.” Working with her partner, Jessica, she decided to hold health education classes for children in grades 3-5. The children were taught easy recipes and fun exercises. For the last day of their program Christina and Jessica held a mother-daughter Zumba dance night. The night was a success, as the smiling participants left with the knowledge that healthy living can be fun.

She also volunteers with St. Anthony di Padova Benevolent Association of Long Island and Relay for Life. consisted of a six-week art education program for children in her community. Through her classes, children learned to express themselves

Admission to the classes was a donation of an item of non-perishable food, so Mollie’s young artists also received the satisfaction of helping others in the community.

“An evening with the Women of Port Washington,” Sara wanted to educate teen girls

interesting history. Girls left the evening knowing they can make a difference in their own town.

Teachers will now take their classes to the mural, as it has been added to the curriculum for language instruction.

Dana was concerned about the issue of childhood obesity and the health issues it can cause. Her Gold Award project was to conduct a series of nutrition clinics for kids ages 8-10, in which the children were encouraged to try healthy food options. She also worked to convince school administrators to make changes in the curriculum and the school cafeterias to support better nutrition.
Dana is a senior at South Side High School, where she designs the sets and costumes in the theater productions and participated in the 2011 “Reflections” contest, where her music and lyrics won in New York State and are currently in the National Competition. Dana also volunteers for various causes in her community. She will study fashion design at college.

Concerned about the harmful chemicals that are used in cleaning products, Deanna designed her Gold Award project “Clean Green”. She educated and informed her community about the hazards

Using “greener” cleaning solutions will have a long-term benefit to individuals and the environment. Deanna also designed and sewed several hats for chemotherapy patients. She taught a Girl Scout Troop how to sew so they can continue this portion of her project.
Deanna is a senior at Wantagh High School where she participates in Leadership Skills, and Key Club. She plans to attend the C.W.Post Campus of L.I.U, and will major in Forensic Science. Outside of school Deanna is an avid equestrian and she hopes to ride for C.W. Post’s team.

The issues of hunger and homelessness on Long Island were the topics of Juliana’s Gold Award project. Witnessing many less fortunate people in her own neighborhood, Juliana felt that she needed to do something about it. Through her efforts, she was able to educate her community about this issue. Developing activities and curriculum for students at a Vacation Bible School in town, she was able to educate younger children about the need in our communities. As a byproduct of this and other efforts, Julie was able to gather donations of over 900 pounds of food that were presented to Long Island Cares.
Juliana is a senior at Wantagh High School, where she is the class secretary. She teaches dance, volleyball, vacation bible school, and is a teacher’s aide for religious education. Juliana plans to major in education at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University.

Wanting to lift the spirits of senior citizen’s, Emily designed her Gold Award project “Garden Rejuvenation.” Emily got to work by refurbishing the garden area at a home for the aged, planting
various types of flowers, vegetables, and herbs. The senior residents can now tend to the growing plants which will keep them physically and mentally active. Emily shared her project via Facebook and Twitter, so all could monitor the progress of the garden.

Knowing that many young people are not informed about the “ins-and-outs” of volunteering, Rachel created her Gold Award project, “Making the Community a Better Place, One Volunteer at a Time.” Rachel held three seminars where she spoke about the importance of volunteering and then she led her community in two volunteer projects, where they planted various flowers representing a “garden of volunteers.”

Jamie went aroundher community speaking to young teens and adults about the impact they can make by donating even small items to our soldiers overseas. Her presentation was not only informative, but was also designed to create empathy for those so far from home. She framed them and sent them abroad with other supplies ranging from games, books, food, and toiletry items.

Interning at an elementary school, Jacqueline knew she wanted to be a special education teacher. Her love for children inspired her Gold Award Project. “Everyone Can Read,” consisted of a reading program that lasted six weeks, where Jacqueline tutored children with reading disabilities. The children were given a book and a snack bag to take home. The students’ grades have improved and their parents were ecstatic with their progress.
Jacqueline graduated in 2010 from Valley Stream North High School, where she was active in the women’s choir, tennis, and badminton team. She was also the coach of her cheerleading squad, an assistant special education catechist, and Norwood Park Civic Association block captain. Jacqueline has completed her freshman year at Molloy College.

Jaclyn’s Gold Award project, “The Lynbrook
Legacy Wall”, was inspired by her town’s Hundred Year Anniversary. Jaclyn created a
Legacy Wall made up of ceramic tiles where

with others and honor those memories and events that shaped the community. The town of Lynbrook was able to come together and build their community pride through Jaclyn’s guiding hand.

Elizabeth’s Gold Award project was designed to educate children in her community on hunger issues throughout the world. Elizabeth held an Oxfam Hunger Banquet at her school, where she

Island and the rest of the United States. Students were impacted by Elizabeth’s project; they could not believe there are so many hungry people right in their own neighborhoods. By informing the community about these issues, hopefully, more people will help by following in Elizabeth’s footsteps.

“Knitting for the Needy” is the title of Stefanie’s Gold Award project, which consisted of various workshops, where she not only taught girls within her community how to knit and give back to those in need, but she raised awareness of the issue of homelessness on Long Island. All of the pieces the girls knitted were then sewed together by Stefanie and became beautiful blankets that were donated to homeless shelters all over Long Island.

As president of the youth board at the Mary Brennan Inn she set up “Plant a Row for the Hungry” to provide fresh fruits and vegetables. Gabby took action by planting gardens, creating a healthy cookbook, and having food banks and restaurants donate surplus foods. She got her whole community involved in the process. She was able to provide 300 pounds of garden goodness for the needy.
Gabriella will be graduating from Carey High School this spring. She is President of the French Club. Gabby plays on a travel soccer team and also enjoys track. She is a member of St. Catherine’s in Franklin Square. She will attend Manhattanville College.

Her community is now aware of the simple things they can do that will make their world a cleaner and better place to live.

worship. For years to come people who live in Franklin Square will be able to look back and see what life was like in 2010 thanks to Kiera and Hannah’s creative project. As an offshoot of this project, the girls are becoming published authors in “The Images of America” series by Arcadia Publishing.

Alana and her partner also created a video and pamphlets to help girls have a fun, safe and affordable prom.

Jacqueline realized that bullying is a serious issue in schools. For her Gold Award project “Project Aggress Less” (PAL) she created a bully prevention workshop which she presented to third grade classes in her community. Jacqueline’s workshop consisted of a ten-minute PowerPoint presentation and two interactive
exercises based upon different bullying scenarios. The students shared that they gained self-confidence and courage as a result of participating in Jacqueline’s workshops.

Many people do not get the proper exercise they need either because gym memberships are too
expensive or simply because exercising is not entertaining. For Heather’s Gold Award Project, “Exercise in Action” she created a five-step exercise walk which was opened to everyone in her community. Heather set up different stations at Washington Street Elementary school, where people could get tips on staying healthy while they walked (or jogged) the course. The course has now become part of recess at the school, so
youngsters can learn to enjoy exercise at an early age.
Heather is a junior at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick, where she is a member of the Key Club, Golf team, and the Recycling Club.
