2009 Young Naturalist Awards Competition

 

The Young Naturalist Awards program invites you to plan and conduct your own scientific investigation, one that will include questions, hypotheses, and trips into the field to gather data. You are not expected to make a new scientific discovery. However, your investigation should provide you with a new understanding about your question.

 

Open to students in grades 7 to 12

Essays must be mailed to the American Museum of Natural History between December 1, 2008, and March 2, 2009.

Cash awards up to $2,500.  Winning essays will be published on the museum's website.

High 5 Long Island

Thanks to the Long Island Arts Council at Freeport, this program once again offers girls ages 13 - 18 the opportunity to see professional performances at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts for the amazing price of $ 5 per ticket!

From Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater  to Prokofiev's Cinderella there is something for everyone!

NYIT Sponsors a Free Night of Fun

Kids ages 4 to 12 are invited to spend an evening at New York Institute of Technology's Sports Complex.  Play games under the direction of NYIT staff and more than 100 student-athletes.  A healthy dinner will be served, and information about nutrition will be distributed.

Date:  Friday, December 5, 2008

Time:  5:30 pm to 9:00 pm

Cost:  FREE

 Mrs. Peck's Pudding

The Widow Polly Peck wants to make a traditional holiday pudding for her orphaned

children.  But this year she just doesn't see how she can because they are so very poor.  So she sends her children out to find someone -anyone- who will be generous enough to provide them with the ingredients for their Christmas pudding. What happens will make you laugh, and might even make you cry.

 

A great night for children of all ages!

Family Barn Dances

A series of fun-filled evenings of live traditional music and dancing...fun for all ages.  Bring your troop - no experience necessary - they will teach you the dances.  How about bringing a parent and making it a special parent-daughter dance?

Open to Girl Scouts of all ages, family and friends.

Dates:  Various Saturdays from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm

Place:  Community Center at Westbury Friends Meeting

           Corner of Post Avenue and Jericho Turnpike

Cost:    Adults $7;  Under 18 FREE

American Red Cross Babysitter Certification Course

This day-long class covers all the basics you need to know to become a confident and successful babysitter.  Given by the American Red Cross.  Open to Individual Cadette, Senior, Ambassador Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scout friends.

Register online for your choice of dates:  If registering online, please complete the "attending adult" information for our records.  Adults are not expected to stay for the program.

Women's History Taking Flight

Learn about famous women in the field of aviation, and how they showed that "the sky is the limit".  This program will be run at the Cradle of Aviation Museum and includes an overnight stay in the museum.  Girl Scout Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes can work towards earned awards, tour the museum, go on a scavenger hunt, and sleep under the planes!

Overnights are scheduled from Friday nights at 7 pm to 8 am Saturday morning.  Many choice dates are available between now and March 2009.
